Nevada's coronavirus-related deaths top 100 after nearly doubling in one week
LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The latest data from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services shows that the number of coronavirus-related deaths in the state has topped 100.
The department reported Friday evening that there have been 102 deaths statewide from COVID-19 with 2,584 positive cases.
This is compared to just eight days before when the total death count was at 52.
The week saw additional restrictions ordered by Steve Sisolak, including the limiting of church services just before Easter weekend.
The Nevada Health Response team says that, so far, 22,749 residents have been tested, Latest Las Vegas News meaning that 20,165 Nevadans have tested negative.
According to the numbers, positive cases are spread rather evenly among age groups and genders, with the largest share belonging to females (47 percent with 18 percent not reporting gender) and those aged 30 to 39 years old (18 percent).
Besides the number of positive coronavirus cases and the related deaths, some of the most staggering statistics come from the state’s department of employment, which reports that there have been 271,533 unemployment claims filed from Jan. 1 to April 4.
The weekly record of 84,113, set back in May 1989, was shattered with 131,121 claims being filed the week of April 4.

On Friday, The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was the latest agency to announce mass layoffs, eliminating 112 part-time positions.
Meanwhile, Governor Sisolak, who called in the National Guard on April 1 to help with the crisis, Press Release Distribution Service said Friday night that his move had been approved by the US. Department of Defense.
This means that the Nevada National Guard will be federally funded.
"I am grateful for the approval of this additional funding, which will help Nevada battle this invisible enemy, flatten the curve and save lives,” Gov. Sisolak said.
The guard is set to assist in delivering medical equipment and supplies, provide workers and help plan the largescale logistical operations that will be needed to handle the COVID-19 crisis.
Sisolak added, “Our exceptional Nevada National Guard trains year-round for crises of all types. They are committed to protecting the health and safety of our citizens, and they are ready to join the fight.”
